What Is an Innerspring Mattress?

+-

An innerspring mattress, or spring mattress, is one of the most traditional and widely used types. It features a coil support system, often made of steel. The coils provide the foundation for the mattress. They can be connected units or individually wrapped pocketed coils. A comfort layer is on top of the coil system to enhance comfort and support.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Innerspring Mattresses?

+-

Many people still choose innerspring mattresses over other types for several key advantages:

  • Durability: Innerspring mattresses are known for their durability and longevity. They often last for many years with proper care.
  • Support: The coil system provides excellent support for the body. They maintain proper alignment and reduce pressure points.
  • Breathability: They tend to be more breathable than other mattress types. The construction allows for better airflow and temperature regulation.
  • Affordability: Innerspring mattresses are generally more affordable compared to other mattress types. If you are a budget-conscious shopper, they are a great choice.

However, like all types, innerspring mattresses come with their disadvantages too:

  • Motion transfer: Innerspring mattresses can transfer motion. This could be an issue for couples or light sleepers.
  • Firmness: Some may be too firm for certain individuals, especially those with back pain.
  • Noise: The coils sometimes make noise when shifting.

How Do I Choose the Right Mattress for My Needs?

+-

When selecting an innerspring mattress, consider the following factors:

  • Your preferred firmness: Do you like a soft, medium, or firm mattress?
  • Your sleep position: Certain sleep positions benefit from innerspring mattresses. They are best for back sleepers.
  • Your weight: Heavier individuals may need a firmer mattress to provide proper support.
  • Your budget: Innerspring mattresses come in a wide range of price points. On top of that, a mattress is a large investment for years to come. Set a budget before you begin your search. Also explore our financing options.
  • Additional features: Some include features like edge support or cooling technology.

Are Innerspring Mattresses Suitable for All Sleep Positions?

+-

Some sleep positions may be more suitable than others:

  • Back sleepers: Innerspring mattresses generally provide good support for back sleepers. They help to maintain a neutral spinal alignment.
  • Side sleepers: Pocketed coils can be a good choice for side sleepers. They offer targeted support for the hips and shoulders. However, if you're a side sleeper with shoulder or hip pain, you want a softer comfort layer.
  • Stomach sleepers: While innerspring mattresses can work for stomach sleepers, a firmer option may be preferable.

What Is the Difference Between a Modern and Traditional Innerspring Mattress?

+-

Traditional innerspring mattresses typically feature a continuous coil system. The springs are connected in a single unit. This design leads to more motion transfer. Movement in one area can easily affect the rest of the mattress.

Modern innerspring mattresses have pocketed coil technology. Each spring is individually wrapped in a fabric pocket. This design helps to isolate motion. Additionally, they frequently include layers of memory foam, latex, or other materials to enhance comfort and pressure relief.

How Often Should I Flip or Rotate My Innerspring Mattress?

+-

Many modern innerspring mattresses are designed to be used one-sided. It's still a good practice to rotate your mattress every three months. Some manufacturers may have specific guidelines for flipping or rotating. Be sure to check the care instructions.

What Is the Lifespan of an Innerspring Mattress?

+-

The lifespan of an innerspring mattress can vary. It depends on factors such as its quality, how it's used, and how well it's cared for. Generally, you can expect one to last between 7 and 10 years.

If you notice sagging, discomfort, or other signs of wear and tear, it may be time for a replacement.
